On 28 February 2022, as the anniversary of the first Luxair flight to Paris Le Bourget on 31 March 1962 approached, the airline launched a call to artists from Luxembourg and the Greater Region to design its next special livery. The wait is over… on 29 June the airline finally unveiled its #FlyingIsAnArt Anniversary edition!
For this third edition of #FlyingIsAnArt, Luxair invited artists to draw their vision of the airline’s future, while highlighting the values of inclusion, diversity, boldness and innovation. The competition was a great success and the company received more than sixty creative entries, each more original than the last.
In April, a pre-selection by Luxair staff resulted in the selection of 11 designs, and in May, the winner, Marco Weiten, was elected by a professional jury of artists and art experts as well as Luxair management.
The Boeing 737-800, registration number LX-LGV, with Marco Weiten’s designs symbolising Luxair’s rebirth and promising future, made its first flight on 29 June to Tenerife.
“60 years of Luxair, of flight, of history, of power, of energy and competence, of serenity and the will to give the best. Let’s celebrate these 60 years together with this living design. Luxair’s colours symbolically go through the different decades and unite in a strong Luxembourgish symbol, the red lion. It represents a Luxembourg tradition, but here it rises from the ashes like a phoenix and all the colours converge in it, the dawn of a fantastic future. All together, we are a positive sign of respect, competence, teaching and practice. At 60 years old, Luxair is just starting to fly… the future is now”, declared Marco Weiten.
“This year is the 60th anniversary of Luxair’s first flight and I am delighted to be able to celebrate it with such a work by Marco. His realistic and colourful art has convinced us and I am confident that it will do the same for all the people who will see this aircraft, in Luxembourg but also in all the other destinations it will fly to. On this livery, the strongest Luxembourg symbol (Roude Léiw) is transformed into a phoenix, perfectly symbolising Luxair’s hoped-for future course. I believe that the objective of this competition, which is to share a positive message that will touch the hearts of as many people as possible, has been achieved with flying colours”, Gilles Feith, CEO of Luxair.
