Delhaize is continuing its efforts for a more sustainable planet despite the current health crisis. With the creation of The Lion’s Footprint action plan and a view to achieving plastic neutrality, Delhaize has decided to put an end to the sale of plastic bags at the counter. Instead, Delhaize now offers bags made from 100% recycled and recyclable paper. A total of 300 tonnes of plastic will be saved each year.
In recent years, Delhaize realised that too many plastic bags were still being purchased by customers for single use. Although plastic bags are used as a low-cost customer convenience item, they are not considered durable enough by the retailer for the single use they offer.
From now on, new recyclable paper bags will be available at the till for customers who forgot to bring their own reusable bag to the shop. The idea behind this action is that everyone can contribute to the fight against plastic waste: the retailer, the producer but also the customer.
Indeed, the long-term objective of this change is to encourage customers to bring their own reusable shopping bags. The paper bags would only serve as a convenience for the customer. Delhaize would therefore like to initiate a sustainable change in the behaviour of its customers so that they use as little plastic as possible.
The paper bags will be available from the end of November at a price of 0.25 eurocents.
As a result of this change, Delhaize estimates a saving of 300 tonnes of plastic per year, which will contribute directly to the ambitious goals of The Lion’s Footprint programme, Delhaize’s integrated sustainability project.
The Lion’s Footprint: reducing the use of plastics
More than a year ago, Delhaize launched The Lion’s Footprint, an ambitious sustainability plan in which the company is 100% committed to the environment and aims to reduce its environmental footprint. The plan has three main components, including the ambitious but achievable goal of achieving plastic neutrality. With this new action, Delhaize is taking another step towards plastic neutrality by gradually replacing the sale of plastic bags until stocks run out and replacing them with 100% recycled and recyclable paper bags.
