On 11 June, the Luxembourg wine competition organised by the Confrérie Saint Cunibert took place to elect the best Auxerrois wines. Our editor-in-chief and CEO, Bibi Wintersdorf had the pleasure of being part of the jury! After three editions of “Rivaner Uncorked”, the organisers have changed the focus of this year’s competition to the Auxerrois.
A bit of history
Auxerrois is a white grape variety that produces particularly gastronomic wines of great diversity. It has a contained acidity with a fresh, fruity and complex taste, accompanied by aromas ranging from melon or mirabelle plum to floral, citrus or exotic fruit notes, quince or honey (especially for the top-of-the-range wines, in barrels). This variety is reminiscent of the white wines of Burgundy.
In the Grand Duchy, the Auxerrois grape variety comes in 3rd place with 182 ha of vines, which corresponds to 15% of the wine-growing area, after the Rivaner in 1st place (21%) and the Pinot gris in 2nd (16%).
During the tasting, the jury, composed of 21 professionals and amateurs, had to choose the best Luxembourg Auxerrois wines from a selection of 54 Auxerrois, coming from 25 wineries.
The jury awarded the “Gëlle Krëmmchen 2022” medal to the following Auxerrois:
Auxerrois of the 2020 vintage:
- Domaine Henri Ruppert, Barrique, Coteaux de Schengen
- Domaine Clos des Rochers, Grevenmacher Fels
- Domaine viticole Schumacher-Knepper, Wintrange Felsberg
Auxerrois of the 2021 vintage:
- Domaine viticole Cep d’Or, Coteaux de Stadtbredimus
- Domaine Clos des Rochers, Grevenmacher Fels
- Domaine Thill, Château de Schengen
- Domaine Schumacher-Knepper, Wintrange Felsberg
- Domaine Desom, Remich Primerberg
Vin de Paille:
- Domaine Charles Decker, Auxerrois 2014, Coteaux de Remeschen
