For its seventh edition, the City Nature Challenge is coming to the orchards in Born on April 30th and May 1st for two entertaining and delicious days dedicated to biodiversity.
Created in 2016 by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Academy of Sciences, the City Nature Challenge is a fun, international initiative to learn more about biodiversity in and around cities and towns. Once again this year, people from all over the world are invited to record the flora and fauna in and around their cities, using the iNaturalist app. The idea? To discover local biodiversity for yourself, to contribute to the scientific database and of course to beat the number of observations made the previous year.
For this new edition, Ramborn is proud to participate in this worldwide event by inviting the public to its orchards on 30 April and 1 May. These two days will be entirely dedicated to the fundamental impact of biodiversity: the BIO BLITZ! Eight scientists from the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), who are part of a European Framework scientific project linking agriculture and biodiversity, will be on hand to discover the local flora and fauna. In addition to guided tours of the grounds, visitors will be able to snack on burgers made by “LëtzeBurger” and of course cool off with freshly pressed cider served from the Ramborn cider wagon. The event will also include fun activities for children, so that everyone can have a good time with friends and family.
Since their early beginnings, biodiversity has been at the heart of Ramborn’s strategy.
In 2016, the three founders of RAMBORN CIDER CO. made a clear observation: since the beginning of the century, almost 90% of Luxembourg’s orchards have disappeared. These orchards are a vital source of biodiversity, each one hosting a large number of microflora, fungi, mosses, lichens and insects, which in turn invite birds and small mammals as well as badgers, foxes, owls and other birds of prey.
Their decision was reached very quickly: they would make cider from apples and pears from Luxembourg’s orchards, in an effort preserve and valorise them as much as possible. The impact of biodiversity immediately became a priority for RAMBORN CIDER CO., which works daily to protect and improve the surrounding biodiversity. This work has borne fruit: not only has RAMBORN CIDER CO. obtained B Corp certification, but in less than a year, on 12 July 2021, the Luxembourg cider company has jumped into the top 5% of B Corp companies worldwide!
At Ramborn, it has long been clear that in order to move towards a sustainable and biodiversity-rich future, we all need to work together. Each and every one of us hcheesas to (and is capable of) contributing to the effort, so we might as well do it in a the framework of a meaningful and entertaining discovery tour!
See you in Born!
