Slow food communities and the notion of Convivium. Each community and convivum operates in a given territory, in permanent dialogue with the rest of the local network and contributes to the international network.
The Terra Madre Network is involved in all Slow Food events, helping producers and activists and educating the public. The network is at the heart of the biennial international meeting, regional and national meetings. An annual global day of action is dedicated to it on 10 December.
Terra Madre Salone del Gusto has been held every two years since 2004 in Turin, Italy, an event co-organized by Slow Food, the Piedmont Region and the City of Turin. In 2018, this spectacular gathering brought together 7,000 Slow Food representatives from 150 countries.
The Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity is structured around “l’arche du goût”, “les Sentinelles”, les “Dix mille Jardins en Afrique”, “l’Alliance des Cuisiniers”, “les Marchés de la Terre”, “Slow Food Travel” et les “Étiquettes Narratives”. Learn more

Sentinelles Slow Food: projects that support endangered production, protect unique regions and ecosystems, rehabilitate traditional manufacturing methods and safeguard native breeds and local plant varieties. 577 “Sentinelles” in over 71 countries. Learn more
L’Alliance Slow Food des Cuisiniers: is a large solidarity network made up of chefs who choose to cook the products of the “Sentinelles” and communities of local producers and commit themselves to promoting them. Learn more
Slow Food Travel. Launched at Terra Madre 2016, Slow Food Travel offers a new model of tourism, involving meetings and exchanges with farmers, cheesemakers, livestock breeders, butchers, bakers and winemakers who, together with the chefs who cook their products, are the storytellers of their region and the specialists in the discovery of local traditions.
Les Marchés de la Terre. These are farmers’ markets that have been established according to guidelines in line with the Slow Food philosophy. These community-run markets are important meeting points, where local producers offer consumers healthy, quality products at fair prices, while ensuring sustainable production methods. Les Étiquettes Narratives, project initiated in 2011. Slow Food stresses the importance of transparent communication on food labels, so that consumers can make informed choices. “Sentinelles” products in more than 20 countries, as well as companies, have committed to providing information on varieties, breeds, cultivation techniques, processing and sourcing territories, animal welfare and preservation and consumption methods. - 1986- Birth of the Slow Food movement in Italy.
- 1989- Signature in Paris of the creation of the international movement and publication of the Slow Food Manifesto.
- 1990-first congress in Venice and creation of Slow Food Publishing, publication of the first Osterie Italia guide.
- 1996-First edition of the Salone del Gusto biennial in Turin, launch of the “Arche du Goût” project.
- 1997- First International Cheese Biennial in Bra (Italy).
- 2000- Slow Food Sentinelles launched.
- 2003- Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity established.
- 2004- Terra Madre with 500 representatives from 130 countries is launched at the Salon del Gusto. Inauguration of the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo (Italy). First Slow Fish biennial.
- 2009- Creation of the Slow Food Alliance of Cooks and Sentinelles network. 20th anniversary of Slow Food.
- December 10th each year Terra Madre is celebrated together with communities around the world to promote good, fair and clean food in a convivial way.
- 2013- Slow Food founder Carlo Petrini receives the United Nations’ highest environmental award (Champions of the Earth).
- 2014- First edition of Slow Meat in Denver, USA.
- 2015-Slow Food takes over a pavilion at the Milan EXPO with exhibitions on biodiversity, vegetable gardens, raw milk cheese and wine. At the EXPO, on 3-6 October, the “We Feed The Planet” event organised by Slow Food and Youth Slow Food brings together 2,500 young farmers from around the world to redefine the future of food.
- 2016- Carlo Petrini is appointed Special Ambassador for the Zero Hunger Initiative in Europe by the FAO in May.
- 2018- Launch of the international Food for Change campaign.
