This year the rainy days festival celebrates two anniversaries: 20 (+1) years of rainy days – 15 (+1) years of rainy days at the Philharmonie! Luxembourg’s international hotspot for contemporary music offers encounters of all kinds this year: «come together again»! From November 12 to December 5, 2021, festivalgoers can hear, see and experience a wide variety of encounters, over the course of 21 concerts.
The festival rainy days was founded in 2000 by a group of musicians and composers around Claude Lenners and Guy Frisch with the twofold aim of giving the Luxembourg New Music scene visibility and presenting international events in Luxembourg. Since 2016 the festival’s artistic director has been Lydia Rilling; this season is her final one as the festival’s chief dramaturge.
21 concerts and performances as well as 18 premieres of new works and numerous artist conversations await the festivalgoers. A conference on November 19 brings together renowned academics to illuminate encounters between the arts from various perspectives.
Until December 5, many international artists will work and perform at the Philharmonie, the Théâtre des Capucins and the Neumünster Abbey.
Luxembourg’s own Catherine Kontz has written Driwwer, Drënner Drop especially for the festival. Together with 100 young musicians of the UGDA (Union Grand-Duc Adolphe) , she invites you to an hour-long live soundwalk along the river Alzette and its many bridges, bathing the neighbourhoods of Clausen and Grund in a completely new sound.
For kids, as part of the series «Philou D», United Instruments of Lucilin performs the world premiere of Deine Freunde aus der Ferne during the festival finale, a musical fairy-tale by the prominent Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa based on an ancient Japanese tale.
