Exhibition to be presented in the Möllerei (Esch-Belval) as part of the European Capital of Culture Esch2022 from the 4th of June until the 14th of August 2022, organised in collaboration with HEK (House of Electronic Arts) and curated by Sabine Himmelsbach and Boris Magrini, with the support of Yulia Fisch.
Dramatic images of extreme weather phenomena – floods, hurricanes, or forest fires due to severe drought – have become ever-present. Our oceans are littered with accumulations of plastic waste. The biodiversity of our planet is diminishing as species of all kinds go extinct. As global warming progresses, these are among the serious issues that demand solutions. It is a fact that these problems are largely man-made and that human activity has a major impact on biological, geological, and atmospheric processes on earth.
The exhibition Earthbound – In Dialogue with Nature presents 19 works by internationally renowned artists with the aim to spark reflection on urgent environmental issues, especially in regard to the complex relationship between human mankind and the ecosystem. The works on view span from tentative blueprints as possible solutions and alternative models for a more eco-aware coexistence with our environment to inquiries into the use of digital tools for a sustainable use of our resources.
Media arts to expand perception and awareness
At the same time, digitalisation is affecting all areas of life, from economy and cultural production to the private sphere. This prompts the question of how digital tools can be applied to advance a sustainable use of our resources. What role can technology take on in fostering a biocentric worldview and true coexistence on the planet between human mankind, the ecosystem and all other species? Accordingly, artistic practices employing media, technologies, and technoscientific methods stand at the centre of the exhibition. The creative application of digital media and new technologies – from artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), interactive and immersive installations, multimedia sculptures and video installations – invite the audience to engage with such questions.
