Mathieu Van Wetteren, chef at the Apdikt restaurant in Steinfort, was awarded his first Michelin star on Monday 26 February 2024.
And that’s 11! Eleven stars are now shining in Luxembourg! Nine restaurants with one star each, and one with 2 stars.
On Monday 26 February 2024, the “Guide Rouge” finally awarded a star to Mathieu Van Wetteren’s “Apdikt” in Steinfort. In his restaurant, housed in a former pharmacy (“Apdikt” in Luxembourgish), the chef offers precise and daring culinary creations, an inventive cuisine influenced by his travels, particularly in Asia.
The “pirate of gastronomy”
His relaxed approach and constant quest for innovation have made him a leading figure in Grand-Ducal cuisine. His unique approach has earned him the nickname “The Pirate of Gastronomy”.
This recognition by Michelin has been eagerly awaited by many of the Grand Duchy’s gourmets. These include 2-star chef Cyril Molard, who last year lamented the lack of recognition for this young chef, and who, by organising a 6-hands event a few weeks ago with Mathieu Van Wetteren and Baptiste Heugens (Equilibrium), wanted to highlight these up-and-coming gastronomic talents. “Mathieu has been working hard for this for years, and today I’m really pleased for him. He deserves this star…” commented the two-starred chef on Monday, who added that he was delighted to keep his two macaroons.
Very moved
When his star was announced, Mathieu Van Wetteren hugged Cyril Molard and his wife Anne-Sophie, seated next to him. The man who describes himself as “a square peg in a round hole“, appeared very emotional on the stage in Antwerp, where he arrived at the side of his partner. “The star represents excellence for me, and I’ve pursued it all my life. And I’m going to continue.”
