We all know brunch, the unavoidable weekend ritual. A few years ago, the drunch trend was also born, favoured by early birds who wanted to meet up with friends without having a real dinner. Today, on the other side of the Atlantic, the trend is for snunch. We tell you all about it!
A trend from Canada
Snunch is simply a contraction of “snack” and “lunch”. For Canadian nutritionist Hubert Cormier, snunch is “a combination of various foods, including a lot of finger food”, he explains in an interview with Canadian magazine La Presse.
You might think of it as a sort of lunchbox in which you put a lot of good (or not so good) things to munch on at lunchtime, but snunch is more specific than that! In fact, the nutritionist states in the same interview that “a snunch is twice as big as a snack but half as small as a meal! The point of snunch is to have several “mini-meals” during the day, thus providing a feeling of satiety and avoiding untimely snacking.
The precision lies in the quantities and the nutritional intake to be respected (with an average of 350 calories). In your box, you need to measure out the right nutritional balance: low-calorie, fibre-rich fruit and vegetables, proteins and cereals.
In his book ” Snunch, 100 combos rapidos pour le boulot, sur le go ou en solo “, the nutritionist gives 100 suggestions of boxes to prepare to brighten up your lunch breaks while consuming half the calories of a normal meal.
What’s the difference with bento?
In terms of visual, you won’t see any differences. Indeed, the snacks are presented in bento boxes. These boxes, which are flourishing everywhere, have 3 or 4 compartments, allowing the various preparations to be separated.
In Japan, the bento box is a lunch container prepared every day for schoolchildren or workers to eat a balanced meal at lunchtime. Here too, the composition is key, with a mixture of starchy foods, proteins and vegetables (cooked and also fermented) to ensure a healthy meal.
Snunch is therefore not very different from the Japanese tradition of bento, but “snunch” has the merit of being named after a trend that will no doubt arrive very quickly in our country! With 3 million subscribers to the hashtag #snunch on TikTok, the craze is already here.
Bon appetit (but not too much!)
