La Grocerie is THE new gourmet grocery in the Grund. Under one roof, you’ll find a sandwich shop (“dvitsch”), a farm shop and a large organic and natural wine cellar.
Arriving at this new grocery shop gives you the impression of being transported to another era. With its historic building, mustard-coloured walls and old-fashioned logo, it’s like being back in 1923. In fact, François, the owner, wanted to make a point of it. “We opened in 2023, but 1923 suited us better, so we stamped that date on the storefront as if we’d jumped back in time 100 years,” he explains with a sense of humour. The name La Grocerie, which comes from the old French word for grocery shop, also reflects a clear desire to get back to the basics of what neighbourhood grocery shops used to be.
Once through the door, the immersion continues with, on one side, a large mural that reflects the founding principles of the project: local, short supply chains and community. On the other, there’s a sandwich corner boasting an old-fashioned decor of pink tiles and hanging salami, as well as a farmer’s grocery corner. All the furniture has been upcycled in order to reduce the ecological footprint.
So what’s the concept? Well, it’s not just one concept, but three!
Local and organic
The establishment is first and foremost a grocery and farm shop. The aim is to promote local producers, offer maximum traceability for the products sold, encourage short supply chains, create a community and become a meeting place in the neighbourhood. “We try to get as much local and organic produce as possible,” says François. As a result, you’ll find vegetables from the Geméiswierk market garden farm based in Contern, pasta from Luxembourg, fresh bread from Pain & Tradition, and cheeses and charcuterie from producers in the Greater Region.
A small butcher’s corner is also planned, as well as a “gourmet picnic basket with a blanket and a natural wine that goes with it so you can go for a walk in the Pétrusse Valley”, adds the owner.
Celebrating pastrami
La Grocerie is also home to Dvistch – Delicatessen, a sandwich shop specialising in authentic pastrami sandwiches. From the classic to the special version, including a Bánh mì with trout and a vegan sandwich with tofu, there’s something for everyone. To eat on the spot or to take away!
As with the vast majority of products in the shop, local producers are also favoured for the creation of these delicacies. For example, the pastrami is homemade from nitrite-free Luxembourgish Angus beef from Carlo Wietor in Beaufort, the trout comes from the Our Valley and the vegetables from small local producers.
Luxembourg’s largest natural wine cellar
Finally, the project would not have been complete without a wine cellar. Why, you might ask? Well, François is also the owner of Vins Fins, a wine bar located next door to his new grocery shop. As a connoisseur, it was impossible for him to consider this new adventure without a wine cellar worthy of the name. What makes it special is that it features only organic, natural or biodynamic wines from Europe, with over 200 references already available.
Furthermore, the wine cellar also functions as a pop-up, allowing five local importers (The Grapeist, Winebrations, etc.) to have a physical sales point where they can present and let customers taste their wines.
There’s also a cosy terrace where you can enjoy a glass of natural wine or a delicious pastrami sandwich on sunny summer days.
A place that exudes gourmet pleasure and local flavours, enough to satisfy all gourmets in the neighbourhood and beyond.
