Starting from October 6th, the Luxembourg City Museum is set to unveil its new exhibition titled “All You Can Eat”. As the name suggests, the spotlight is on all things edible. However, the scope delves deeper than one might initially assume. The focus isn’t just on the journey of food, from its origins to its destinations, but primarily on humanity’s intricate relationship with what we eat.
Eating is a daily ritual, that many people take for granted. In this oversight, we frequently forget how this very act has not only shaped contemporary society but has deeply influenced the course of human history. This is precisely where the new exhibit at the Luxembourg City Museum takes a stand: tracing the journey of our sustenance, from the careful sowing of seeds to the, sadly inevitable, waste.
The exhibition sheds light on societal issues, our identity, evolution, and values. An intriguing question hangs in the air: How has the food on our plate-shaped us? And reciprocally, how do we shape what we consume? The old saying goes, “You are what you eat”. Yet, you’re also defined by HOW you eat. Few practices are as profoundly influenced by cultural and social norms as eating.
From humanity’s transition to settled life with the advent of agriculture to religious dietary commandments to global supply chains and resource scarcity – the subject is exhaustively explored and questioned.
Of course, a comprehensive examination of this topic would be incomplete without looking into the future. The exhibit prompts visitors not only to look back but also to envision the role of food in the world of tomorrow.
Complementing the exhibition is an extensive series of associated events, including conferences, movie nights, and even live cooking demonstrations. Just a stone’s throw away, at the Cercle Cité, another exhibition titled “Hors-d’oeuvre” runs concurrently, examining the multifaceted meanings of food through the lens of contemporary art – a splendid complement.
The Luxembourg City Museum invites to delve into the multifaceted ties between us humans and our food, journeying from the past, through the present, and into the future, encouraging exploration, reflection, and of course, enjoyment.
